1

four years ago Dr. Thomas E. Lovejoy and other biologists began a remarkable experiment on the fasteroding fringe of rain forest near the Brazilian city of Manaus. They established 11 forest tracts ranging from 2.5 to 250 acres each surrounded by an isolating sea of pasture similar to what is advancing around most other tropical forests. Among the many findings an analysis published last week on birds in the lower layers of greenery found that it would take a fragment measuring at least 2500 acres—10 times as large as the biggest one in the experiment—to prevent a decline of 50 percent in those bird varieties in just 15 years or so.

In the understated language of science the new study in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences concludes “This is unfortunate when one considers that for some speciesrich areas of the planet a large proportion of remaining forest is in fragments smaller than 2500 acres.”

In the face of this and other evidence a growing group of conservation biologists say try everything at the same time. “Clearly the most effective way to protect biodiversity is to protect natural areas” said Dr. Peter H. Raven the director of the Missouri Botanical Garden “and to find those organisms most endangered in nature and somehow protect them in typeculture collections botanical gardens zoos seed banks or whatever.” But most important he said is to find ways to limit human pressures on the world’s last wild places by slowing population growth and using resources more efficiently. One pioneer of genetic deconstruction Dr. J. Craig Venter agrees with Dr. Raven. Dr. Venter has moved from sequencing the DNA of humans and other species to assaying genes in entire ecosystems most recently the waters of the Sargasso Sea. In five 50gallon samples gathered in February he said his team had found 1 million distinct genes quite a haul compared with the 26000 or so of a human being. And that is the tiniest scratch in the surface he added. His is one effort among many. Britain has a Millennium Seed Bank a growing archive of all the country’s plants. The San Diego Zoo has its parallel Frozen Zoo an archive of thousands of DNA samples and cell lines from a host of species. Nonetheless given the overwhelming complexity of nature Dr. Venter added “we’re better off trying to preserve the diversity of what we have rather than trying to regenerate it in the future.”

Don't worry about looking handsome,Or being strong and brave.Just as you love me unconditionally,I love you just the same.

If I cried a tear of painful sorrow,If I lost all hope for a new tomorrow,Would you dry my tear and ease my pain,Would you make me smile once again?

how do i say i love you? how do i tell you i care? how do i tell you i've missed you, and let you know i'm here?

The United States will work more closely with China to curb the illegal trade in wild animals and wildlife products, a senior US official told a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday.

Claudia McMurray, assistant secretary of the bureau of oceans and international environmental and scientific affairs, told China Daily: "No one government or private group can combat this sophisticated criminal activity alone and hope to succeed.

"The United States looks forward to China's joining the Coalition Against Wildlife Trafficking," she said.

The Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) is also seeking the opportunity to work with China, she said.

Law enforcement networks have had "success in rescuing and returning live animals to their native countries and have disrupted several groups involved in wildlife trafficking", McMurray said.

The trade in illegal wildlife products rivals drugs and arms trafficking in terms of the money that is made, she said.

"Endangered animals are the new blood diamonds," she said.

"Wildlife trafficking is closely linked to organized crime. Estimates of the value of this illegal trade range from between million and million a year," she said.

Such trafficking has pushed many species to the edge to extinction, and it also poses severe health threats to humans, as diseases like bird flu, SARS, the Ebola virus and tuberculosis, can be carried and transmitetd by animals, McMurray said.

But cooperating to catch the traffickers is only part of the solution, she said. The US and China must also work together to stamp out demand for animal products through better public education.

"Some consumers buy these products when they travel abroad, or source them over the Internet but they think that what they are buying is perfectly legal," McMurray said.

Peter Knights, executive director of Wild Aid, said at Tuesday's press conference that wildlife trafficking is a global problem, but the US and China should take the lead.

"Cooperation between the two countries has to be on a long-term basis, but I have seen their shared interest and they are moving in the right direction," he said.

Under the Chinese law, anyone found guilty of hunting or trading wild animals under national protection can be jailed for up to 10 years.

In recent years, the Ministry of Public Security has pressed police forces across the country to crack down on the hunting, smuggling and sale of protected animals.

Last year, police handled more than 172,000 cases involving the destruction of wildlife and forest resources, and rescued about 1.5 million wild animals from poachers, the ministry said.
